Yes, it can be laid on decking. As long as the decking was installed to a high standard, there’s no risk of it rotting underneath the artificial grass. Drainage and weed prevention are already accounted for, making decking the ideal surface for applying artificial turf. Before installing artificial grass on decking, it’s important to check that the decking is in good health. If it’s not, you may need to pull up the turf to repair or replace it, which can be both inconvenient and costly. Make sure the weed membrane that should have been applied underneath the decking is still intact. If it’s not, replace it where necessary. Even though artificial grass is more weed resistant than natural turf, they can still spring up around the edges. Known as surface weeds, they sprout up because airborne seeds or leaves have made their way onto the grass from surrounding trees. Fortunately, because these weeds grow close to the surface of the turf, all you need to do is gently pull them up. Weeds are unlikely to prove much of a problem on an artificial lawn, particularly if a weed membrane is installed. To reduce the risk of weeds growing on your artificial grass, steep the lawn regularly with a stiff brush. This will help to remove airborne seeds that can turn into pesky weeds. What goes under artificial grass can vary depending on where it’s installed. If you’re laying it on a harder surface such as decking or concrete, a foam underlay may be used. Underlay is even more important for surfaces which are uneven since over time the grass can become ridged and less smooth. Underlay provides an extra layer of material to keep it as flawless as possible. Other products that might be installed under artificial grass include crushed aggregate/gravel, granite dust, astro cushion, and a weed membrane.
