How Do You Prepare the Ground for Artificial Grass?

Your Essential Guide

Artificial grass has become a popular alternative to natural lawns, and gives you a low-maintenance, lush outdoor space all year round. How though, do you lay the foundation for a successful artificial grass installation? Here is everything you need to know.

Preparing the Ground

Get started by clearing the area of all existing grass, along with weeds and other vegetation. It’s important that you take care to be as thorough as possible while doing this, as organic material could disrupt your new artificial lawn.

Next, you need to dig out the soil to around 40mm – 50mm to account for your new artificial lawn. Although not affecting the ground directly, it’s a good idea to trim any bushes and shrubs that could make installation tricky back.

Sub-Base and Sand

Now comes the sub-base! This should be spread evenly over the area your new lawn will occupy, and should be done to a depth of 30-40 mm. Crushed stone or gravel is the most common material used for this purpose. Use a rake to level it out, ensuring a smooth surface.

After the sub-base is compacted, apply a layer of sharp sand, approximately 10-15mm thick. This layer helps to create a smooth surface and aids in proper drainage. Level the sand using a tool such as a heavy hammer, builder’s plank or whacker plate. Ensure the surface is even and smooth, as any imperfections could affect the appearance and feel of your artificial grass.

Installing a Weed Membrane

A high-quality weed membrane is essential to prevent weed growth without getting in the way of drainage. Opt for a durable, breathable membrane that has been designed for landscaping purposes. Roll it out over the sand layer, overlapping the edges slightly. Secure it with landscape staples or U-pins, ensuring it stays in place during the installation process.

You’re Ready for Installation!

Now that you’ve prepared the ground, you’re ready to install your new grass. It might seem like a long process to get to this point, but taking the time to prep the ground properly ensures that your new artificial lawn will not only look its best for years to come, but won’t be ruined by weeds or disturbed by anyone walking on it.
